Tokaj-Hegyalja has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002 as a historical wine region and cultural landscape. It is the world's first closed wine region with origin protection since 1737. There are still 600-700-year-old cellar labyrinths carved into the rhyolite tuff in the depths of Hegyalja - where the iconic wine of the Tokaj wine region, the Tokaj aszú is matured. The aszú is the world's most complex sweet wine and one of the best-known hungaricums worldwide. What’s more the largest cellar labyrinth in the wine region is located in Tállya.

The landscape

Tállya is a mystical place. A sleepy village of a few thousand residents, which according to some measurements, lies in the geometric center of Europe. It was founded by Walloon settlers in the 13th century, and in the 18th century it was already the most populous market town in Zemplén county with the largest vineyard fields.
The Rákóczi family played a decisive role in the foundation of the built and intellectual heritage of Tálllya. Kossuth Lajos was baptized here, the violinist Lavotta János once lived here, and in Mikszáth Kálmán’s ‘A Strange Marriage’ novel, the characters are based on the residents of the village.
